What is the difference between human trafficking and slavery?
Human trafficking is slavery. Trafficking is the act of recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of a human for the purpose of exploitation either within or outside a country. Human trafficking is the process or act of enslaving a human being. Slavery is the state of entire subjection of a person to the will of another.
What is the actual definition of human trafficking?
The definition comes from the Trafficking Victims’ Protection Act (2000, 2003, 2005, 2008) which defines “severe forms of trafficking” as a. sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 18 years of age; or b. the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery. Note that a victim need not be physically transported from one location to another in order for the crime to fall within these definitions.
What should I do if I suspect a potential human trafficking situation?
If there appears to be imminent or immediate danger, call 911. Even if your local law enforcement has not yet received training on human trafficking, they are trained to deal with emergencies. If it is not an emergency situation, call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline at 1-888-3737-888. This is the national, toll-free hotline, available to answer calls from anywhere in the country, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Call takers are trained to assess and properly refer case reports and hotline staff are multi-lingual.
Does The Mavuno Project Rescue Children?
Our work is not in the area of rescue and recover. We trust that work to law enforcement and teams equipped and trained to handle rescue missions. If and when we encounter a child in danger we contact the Human Trafficking Hotline 1-888-373-7888 and work with local organizations who offer them the safety and assistance they need. The Mavuno Project’s main goal is prevention and education.
